What is the Average Age of Menopause in the World?

Menopause, or the permanent end to menstruation, typically occurs during a woman’s mid-40s to early 50s. However, there are some factors that can affect when a woman will enter menopause. While the average age of menopause globally is not precisely known, various studies and surveys have highlighted certain ranges and averages across different countries.

  • In North America, estimates vary significantly depending on which country you look at. In Canada for example, the average age of menopause is 51 years old according to a report from Statistics Canada. In America meanwhile, research shows that American women enter menopause between the ages of 42 and 56 years old.

In Europe, women tend to experience menopause slightly earlier than those in North America – around 50 yeas old in Western Europe compared to 53 years old in Eastern Europe.

Women living in Asia tend to enter menopause at an even earlier age – research published by Stanford University found that women in Japan are entering menopause at 44 years old on average while those in Singapore reach it at 45 years old on average.

The reasons why women may experience menopause at different ages could depend on a variety of lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise or environmental influences that are unique to each region or country they live in. Additionally it also depends on their genetic makeup as well – some families have an increased likelihood of family members going through earlier onset menopause due to hereditary factors.

Besides this there is also evidence that suggests certain medical treatments can speed up the onset of an individual woman’s period reduction leading into their period cessation (menopause). According to Dr Chavi Karkowsky from NYU Langone Health “chemotherapy for breast cancer treatment can cause short-term amenorrhea (cessation) resulting from ovarian failure plus other ovarian changes." This means that individual circumstances such as health issues like cancer could be contributing factors influencing an individual woman's age of first experiencing signs related to perimenopausal changes..
